How to Register for IELTS Exam in India?

Most Indian candidates still believe they can register for IELTS through either IDP or the British Council. That has not been true since July 2021 — IDP acquired the British Council's India IELTS business for £130 million and has been the sole administrator since. If you find a British Council booking link for India, it will not work. This page walks through the 2026 IELTS registration process end to end: what you need before you start, the exact online and offline steps, what the ₹18,000 fee covers, how rescheduling works, and the small mistakes that cause the most test-day problems.

What You Need Before You Begin?

The IDP online portal has a session timeout of roughly 25 to 30 minutes. Have these four things ready before you click Register:

  • Valid passport with at least six months of remaining validity. Your name on the application must match exactly — including middle names, hyphens, and spacing.
  • Scanned colour copy of the first and last passport pages — clear, readable, JPG or PDF under 5 MB.
  • Payment method ready: credit card, debit card, net banking, UPI, or PayTM wallet, with OTP-receiving phone accessible.
  • Working email and phone number that you actively check — all confirmations and result notifications go here.

If your passport expires within six months, renew it first — IELTS scores are tied to passport details and cannot be transferred later. Our IELTS exam fees in India page lists the full 2026 fee structure, including UKVI and Life Skills variants.

Step-by-Step Online IELTS Registration Process

Online registration takes under 30 minutes if your documents are ready. Follow these steps in order:

  1. Visit ieltsidpindia.com and click Register for IELTS or Book Now.
  2. Select your test type carefully — Academic (university admissions), General Training (most migration), UKVI Academic/General (UK visas), or Life Skills A1/B1 (UK family/spouse visas). This cannot be changed after payment.
  3. Choose the test format — computer-delivered (almost daily) or paper-based (48 fixed dates per year, mostly Saturdays and Thursdays).
  4. Pick your city and test centre from IDP's 60+ centres across metro and Tier-2 cities including Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, Lucknow, Indore, Coimbatore, Mysuru, and Vadodara.
  5. Select your date and time slot from the live calendar — our IELTS exam dates in India page lists the full 2026 paper-based schedule for planning ahead.
  6. Fill in personal details exactly as on your passport — full name, date of birth, nationality, and address. A single spelling difference causes test-day rejection.
  7. Upload your passport scan (colour, first and last pages). Black-and-white or unclear scans are rejected.
  8. Select up to 5 Recognised Organisations to receive free score reports. Additional reports later cost ₹1,500 each.
  9. Pay ₹18,000 via credit card, debit card, net banking, UPI, or PayTM wallet. Transaction is OTP-protected.
  10. Receive instant confirmation by email and SMS, with your test date, centre, and unique candidate number — save this for test day.

For paper-based candidates, IDP sends a separate prompt within a few days to book your Speaking test slot. Skip it and the system auto-allocates a slot you cannot change.

Offline Registration at an IDP Centre

If you prefer not to register online, you can walk in to any IDP IELTS branch or authorised input node:

  1. Visit your nearest IDP IELTS branch and request the application form, or use the centre's computer with staff assistance.
  2. Submit a photocopy of your passport's first and last pages (plus observation pages if any).
  3. Sign the Terms & Conditions form with a signature matching your passport.
  4. Pay the fee by debit card, credit card, cash, or demand draft (drawn in favour of IDP Education India Pvt. Ltd., payable in New Delhi).
  5. Collect your acknowledgement slip immediately. Email confirmation arrives within 24 hours.

Payment Options and Fee Breakdown

Test Variant

2026 Fee (INR)

IELTS Academic

₹18,000

IELTS General Training

₹18,000

IELTS UKVI (Academic / GT)

₹18,250

IELTS Life Skills (A1 / B1)

₹17,100

IELTS One Skill Retake (computer-delivered only)

₹13,500

The ₹18,000 fee covers the test itself, your TRF (Test Report Form), and up to 5 free score reports to Recognised Organisations. Additional TRFs cost roughly ₹1,500 each. For UK nurses planning NMC registration through IELTS, our IELTS score for UK nurses page explains which fee variant applies — most healthcare candidates need the standard Academic test, not UKVI.

Common Registration Mistakes to Avoid

Passport name mismatch. The single biggest cause of test-day rejection. Even a missing initial or extra space causes denial. Type your name exactly as printed — character for character.

Choosing the wrong test type. Booking Academic when you need General Training (or vice versa) is non-refundable. Indian nurses to the UK or Australia need Academic; migration to Canada or New Zealand often requires General Training — our IELTS vs OET for nurses page clarifies which fits which destination.

Booking before you are ready. Scores are valid for 24 months. Booking before serious preparation usually means a retake — take a diagnostic mock first via IELTS online coaching in India before locking in the live test.

Last-minute Saturday booking in peak months. January–March and September–November are peak — Saturday slots in metros fill within 48 hours. Book at least four weeks ahead.

Reschedule, Cancellation, and One Skill Retake

IDP allows date changes, but the timing matters:

  • More than 5 weeks before the test: you can reschedule or cancel for a partial refund (administration fee deducted).
  • Less than 5 weeks before the test: you typically forfeit the full fee unless you have a documented medical certificate.
  • Medical exemption: if you submit a medical certificate at least 5 days before the test, you can reschedule without losing the fee.
  • IELTS One Skill Retake: if you score your target band in three sub-tests but fall short on one, you can retake just that single section within 60 days of the original test for ₹13,500. Available only for computer-delivered IELTS.
