Before you start studying vocabulary lists or practising writing essays, you need to answer a simpler question: how much is this going to cost? The IELTS exam fee in India is not a small amount, especially when you add coaching, travel to the test centre, and the possibility of a retake. Knowing the exact numbers upfront helps you plan a realistic budget instead of discovering surprise costs halfway through your preparation.
This page covers the current IELTS registration fees in Indian rupees for both Academic and General Training, what IDP and British Council charge, how retake pricing works, and the total cost picture when you factor in coaching and related expenses. If you are a healthcare professional preparing for IELTS for overseas migration, we have also included destination-specific context so you know what score you are aiming for.
Current IELTS Exam Fees in India (2026)
The two official test partners set the IELTS exam fee in India, the British Council and IDP Education. Both charge the same amount for the standard paper-based and computer-delivered tests.
|
Test Type |
Fee (INR) |
Notes |
|
IELTS Academic (paper-based) |
₹16,250 |
Required for most healthcare registrations (UK NMC, Canada NNAS, USA CGFNS) |
|
IELTS Academic (computer-delivered) |
₹16,250 |
Same fee as paper-based. Results available in 3–5 days instead of 13. |
|
IELTS General Training (paper-based) |
₹16,250 |
Used for immigration/PR applications (e.g., Canadian Express Entry) |
|
IELTS General Training (computer-delivered) |
₹16,250 |
Same fee. Faster results. |
|
IELTS for UKVI (Academic) |
₹16,500 |
Required specifically for UK visa applications. Slightly higher fee. |
|
IELTS Life Skills (A1/B1) |
₹15,350 |
For a UK spousal/family visa. Tests speaking and listening only. |
Key point: There is no fee difference between IDP and British Council for the same test type. Choose your test partner based on date availability and centre location, not price. Both deliver the same exam, the same scoring, and the same certificate.
A common question we hear from candidates: Does the computer-delivered version cost more? No. The fee is identical at ₹16,250. The only advantage is speed; you get results in three to five days instead of thirteen. For healthcare professionals on tight migration timelines, those ten days can make a meaningful difference in getting your application submitted to NMC, NMBI, or NNAS before a recruitment deadline.
Also worth noting: the IELTS for UKVI (UK Visas and Immigration) is a slightly different product at ₹16,500. It is administered under stricter security conditions and is specifically required for certain UK visa categories. If your recruiter or immigration consultant has specified UKVI, do not book the standard Academic test; the visa office will not accept it, and your ₹16,250 will be wasted.
How to Pay the IELTS Registration Fee?
Payment is made online during the registration process. Accepted methods include credit card, debit card, net banking, and, in some cases, UPI. There is no option to pay at the test centre on exam day; the fee must be cleared before your seat is confirmed.
The registration process itself takes about 15–20 minutes if you have your documents ready. For a step-by-step walkthrough of the booking process, see our IELTS registration guide.
One practical tip: if you are booking a computer-delivered test, seats fill up faster because results come back in three to five days instead of thirteen. Book at least three to four weeks in advance, especially during peak months (January–March and September–November).

What If You Need to Retake? Retake Fees and Policies
Unlike OET, IELTS does not allow you to retake individual sub-tests. If you miss your target in even one section — say, writing — you must retake all four sections and pay the full fee again. At ₹16,250 per attempt, a retake is an expensive lesson.
IELTS One Skill Retake was introduced as a pilot in some countries, but availability in India is limited and varies by test centre. As of early 2026, most Indian test centres still require the full retake. Always confirm retake options with your specific centre before assuming you can retake a single section.
This is one of the most important cost differences between IELTS and OET. OET allows individual sub-test retakes at a lower cost per section. If you are deciding between the two exams and the risk of retaking concerns you, this factor is worth weighing carefully.
We have published a full side-by-side comparison covering fees, format, retake policy, and destination acceptance on our IELTS vs OET comparison page.
Total Cost: Exam Fee + Coaching + Extras
The ₹16,250 exam fee is just one component of your total IELTS spend. Here is what the full picture looks like for a typical candidate in India.
|
Cost Component |
Estimated Range (INR) |
Notes |
|
IELTS exam fee |
₹16,250 |
Per attempt. No partial retakes in most Indian centres. |
|
Coaching/preparation |
₹8,000–₹25,000 |
Depends on duration, batch size, and whether mocks are included. |
|
Study materials |
₹1,000–₹3,000 |
Cambridge IELTS books, online resources. |
|
Additional test reports (ATRs) |
₹1,500 per copy |
First 5 score reports are free. Extra copies cost ₹1,500 each. |
|
Travel to the test centre |
₹500–₹3,000 |
Depends on your city and the nearest centre. |
|
Total (first attempt) |
₹26,750–₹48,750 |
Range depends on coaching quality and location. |
|
Total (with one retake) |
₹43,000–₹65,000 |
A retake doubles the exam fee component. |
The difference between ₹27,000 and ₹65,000 is essentially the difference between passing on the first attempt and needing a retake. That is why preparation quality matters more than preparation cost. A ₹25,000 coaching programme that gets you Band 7 on the first attempt saves more money than an ₹8,000 course that leads to a retake.
One thing many candidates overlook: the five free Additional Test Reports (ATRs) included with your fee. These allow you to send your IELTS score directly to five institutions or regulatory bodies at no extra cost. If you need more than five, say, you are applying to multiple provinces in Canada or sending scores to both NMC and a specific NHS trust, each additional copy costs ₹1,500. Plan your applications before your test date so you can list the right recipients during registration and avoid paying for extras later.
What Score Are You Paying to Achieve?
The fee is the same regardless of which country you are targeting, but the stakes are not. Different nursing regulators require different band scores, and the higher the bar, the more likely you are to need serious preparation — or a retake.

Destination |
Regulatory Body |
Minimum IELTS Score |
|
UK |
NMC |
7.0 in each sub-test |
|
Ireland |
NMBI |
7.0 overall, no band below 6.5 |
|
Canada |
NNAS + Provincial Boards |
6.5–7.0 (varies by province) |
|
USA |
CGFNS / VisaScreen |
6.5 overall, 7.0 in Speaking |
|
Australia |
AHPRA |
7.0 in each sub-test (most accept OET as an alternative) |
The UK’s NMC has one of the strictest requirements, Band 7 in all four sections. Our UK IELTS score guide explains what commonly trips up candidates and how to close the gap.
The USA requires a particularly high speaking score (7.0) that many Indian candidates struggle with. Our USA IELTS breakdown covers what CGFNS and VisaScreen specifically assess.
Nurses heading to Ireland have slightly more flexibility since NMBI accepts both IELTS and OET. Check the Ireland score requirements to see which option suits your profile better.
Canada’s provincial licensing boards each set their own thresholds, which can be confusing. Our Canada IELTS requirements page clarifies what each province expects.
For Australia, most nursing candidates prefer OET over IELTS because the healthcare-specific format feels more natural. See our Australia IELTS guide to compare both options.
