Introduction
Picking the right IELTS test date is half the battle. Book too early, and you may not be ready. Book too late and you risk missing a recruitment cut-off, a visa lodgment window, or a hospital joining date. For Indian nurses and doctors planning to work in the UK, Ireland, Canada, the USA, or Australia, the slot you choose can shape the next twelve months of your career — and the cost of a missed deadline is often far higher than the IELTS fee itself.
This guide gives you the full verified 2026 IELTS calendar in India from both IDP Education and the British Council, explains the major mid-2026 change every candidate must know about, and helps you align your test date with your migration timeline. Every date listed below has been cross-checked against official sources as of late April 2026, so you can plan with confidence.
Quick Overview: IELTS in India in 2026
Important update: From mid-2026, IELTS is moving fully to a computer-delivered format. Paper-based IELTS will be discontinued globally. IDP India has officially published paper dates only through June 2026. From July 2026 onwards, every IELTS test in India — Academic, General Training, UKVI, and Life Skills — will be delivered on a computer at IDP and British Council centres.
Computer-delivered IELTS runs seven days a week at most major centres, often with two or three slots per day. So while paper dates are now finite, computer-delivered dates are effectively unlimited — you can almost always find a seat within a week if you book in a Tier-1 city like Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, or Chennai.
For healthcare candidates planning a 2026 test, this transition has one practical implication: if you specifically want the paper-based format, you must test before June 2026. After that, the computer-delivered version becomes your only option. The good news is that result times also drop from 13 days (paper) to 3–5 days (computer), which often saves valuable time on tight migration timelines.

Below is the complete verified paper-based IELTS calendar for India in 2026. The IDP India calendar applies nationally — every IDP test centre across all 60+ Indian cities shares the same paper-based dates. The British Council global calendar runs in parallel with slightly different dates.

IDP vs British Council: Are the Dates the Same?
No — IDP and the British Council run independent calendars, even though both deliver the same exam, the same scoring, and the same certificate. IDP India publishes one fixed national paper-based calendar that applies to every Indian centre. The British Council follows the global IELTS calendar, which has different dates and slightly more frequency in some months. For example, IDP shows 4 paper dates in February 2026, while the British Council shows only 4 dates but on different Saturdays — so a candidate with a specific weekend free can pick whichever partner has the matching date.
A practical tip we share with our healthcare candidates: check both partners on the same day. If IDP shows no Saturday slot in Bengaluru, the British Council may have one in the same city. The fee is the same for both. For the full fee breakdown, including UKVI and Life Skills pricing, see our IELTS exam fees in India page.
When Should Healthcare Professionals Book Their Test?
For nurses and doctors planning overseas migration, your IELTS date should be reverse-engineered from your destination's regulatory timeline. A few common patterns:
- UK: Allow three to four months between your test and your NMC application submission. Our IELTS score guide for UK nurses explains the Band 7 requirement.
- Ireland: NMBI applications are smoother when your IELTS is within the past two years. See the IELTS score for nurses in Ireland.
- USA: A 7.0 in Speaking is non-negotiable for VisaScreen. Plan a buffer for a possible retake. Read more on the IELTS score for USA nurses.
- Australia: Many candidates pick OET instead. Our IELTS score for nurses in Australia guide explains both routes.
Rule of thumb: count back from your hardest deadline (visa lodgment, NMC OSCE booking, employer joining) and give yourself a 60-day buffer for one retake plus the result wait. For a January 2027 start, October 2026 is your real cut-off.
Common Mistakes When Booking IELTS Dates in India
Booking too soon after starting prep. Many candidates pick a date eight weeks out before they have taken a diagnostic test. If your starting band is below your target by 1.5 points or more, eight weeks is rarely enough — Writing and Speaking improve slowly. Take a mock test first, then book.
Choosing a centre that is geographically inconvenient. A test centre two hours away saves you nothing if you arrive sleep-deprived. Pick the closest centre with the format you need, even if the date is a week later.
Ignoring the Speaking interview date. The Speaking test may be scheduled up to seven days before or after the main test. Always confirm both dates work before paying.
Not budgeting for a retake. UK NMC requires 7.0 in every sub-test with no exceptions. Build at least one retake possibility into your timeline. If you are unsure about your prep, structured IELTS online coaching in India lowers retake risk substantially.
Booking around the festival or exam season. January–March (engineering and PG entrance season) and September–November (study-abroad rush) see Fuller centres. Book a month ahead during these windows.
Forgetting that scores expire in two years. Your IELTS Test Report Form is valid for 24 months from the test date. Several of our candidates have lost months waiting for visa decisions, only to find their scorecard expired before the file moved to the regulator. If you are early in your planning, do not test before your migration paperwork is genuinely ready to progress within 18 months.
What If Your Preferred Date Is Full?
Peak booking months — January through March and September through November — see slots disappear within hours of release. You have three workarounds: switch from paper to computer-delivered (computer slots open daily), try the other partner (a date full at IDP may be open at British Council), or travel to a Tier-1 city nearby. A candidate in Mysuru could shift to Bengaluru and find a slot two weeks earlier; a candidate in Vadodara could try Ahmedabad. The travel cost is usually less than the cost of waiting.
If your deadline is so tight that you are reconsidering the exam itself, the IELTS vs OET comparison explains which test is faster to book and easier to clear. New to the booking flow? Our step-by-step IELTS registration guide walks through documents, payment, and confirmation.
